Academic programming

Ours is a house where children may work and grow at their own pace. Our primary curriculum includes language, mathematics, geometry, geography, history, pre-history, botany, biology, music and art. However, the prepared environment of the Montessori classroom ministers to the needs of the “whole child.” The class and activity rooms—equipped with Montessori apparatus, conventional, and improvisational materials—are part of a total concept of education that extends the classroom to the natural environment, the home, and the community. Even the physical structure of Children’s House allows our children to feel comfortable and “at home,” and the three-level home affords a natural distribution of boundaries for the children:

Infant Class (3 Mos. – 14 Mos.)

Situated in the lower level of the house—no stairs to climb, private entrance to the rear playground, and partitioned from the rest of the house for maximum harmony.

A limited number of spaces are available each year. Please contact us to find out more!

Toddler Class (15 Mos. – 36 Mos.)

Situated in the lower level of the house—no stair climbing (a lesson taught in this room!), utilizes the main, rear entrance facing the playground. Children in the downstairs class focus on their environment, learn respect for others, and gain an understanding of the Montessori method. Potty training begins and is encouraged in this class.

Primary Class (3 – 6 Yrs, Pre-K & Primary)

Once 3 years old and potty trained, children move into our Pre-K/Primary classrooms. At Children’s House, there are two Primary classrooms—the main level (“Upstairs”), and the carriage house (“Outside”) located on the rear of the property adjacent to the playground areas. Children at this level are adapting well to the Montessori method and begin to both tutor and learn from themselves, fostering confidence and independence, We begin with practical and social skills, not just academic skills— keeping track of personal belongings, putting things away, dressing oneself, sharing an adult, sharing materials, and respecting the limits of the community are some of the many aspects of total development which are the initial benefits of the Montessori pre-school class. These are the foundations for growing independence.

Elementary Class (6 – 10 Yrs, 1st Through 5th Grades)

They are taught the standard 1st through 5th-grade curriculum, yet encouraged to learn at their own pace. They often present science projects, talent, and music shows to the entire school and are encouraged to mentor the Primary children. Juniors also learn how to be good citizens of our community and can often be seen taking organized walks or making supervised visits to local libraries or museums.
